What is Restorative Dentistry?

Restorative dentistry is the term used to describe the replacement of missing or damaged teeth. Typical restorative options include fillings, crowns, bonding, bridges and implants.

Filling empty spaces in the mouth and replacing teeth through restorative dentistry makes it easier to maintain good oral care habits to help prevent plaque build-up and the problems plaque can lead to.

Types of Restorative Dentistry

Bonding

If you’re dealing with a chipped, cracked or discoloured tooth, an aesthetic restorative dentistry treatment like cosmetic bonding is the best option for you.

At Bright and White Dental Spa, we often provide composite bonding in conjunction with other cosmetic dental treatments like teeth whitening to leave our clients with a glistening smile.

The process begins with your dentist selecting a composite resin colour that closely matches the colour of your natural teeth. They will then roughen the surface of the tooth and apply a liquid that allows the bonding agent to stick to the tooth. Lastly, your dentist will apply the composite resin over the liquid, mould or shape the tooth, and then harden the material with an ultraviolet light.

Unlike other restorative dentistry treatments, there is no need to remove a layer of your natural, healthy tooth to accommodate the restoration.

Bridges

Dental bridges are a form of restorative dentistry that can close the gaps in your smile. A dental bridge is a false tooth that is held in place by two crowns on either side. The crowns fit over the supporting teeth, providing a natural looking solution to perfect your smile and improve your confidence.

A dental bridge can address many issues including restoring the ability to properly chew, rehabilitating your speech and pronunciation, maintaining the shape of your face, re-adjusting your bite and preventing your remaining teeth from moving out of the correct position.

If you’re missing a tooth or a number of teeth, there are many benefits to using dental bridges. If you’d like to discuss the option in further detail with one of our restorative dentistry consultants, please do get in touch.

Crowns

Dental crowns are tooth-shaped “caps” that can be placed over your tooth. The dental crown is cemented into place and covers the visible portion of the tooth, restoring the tooth’s shape, size, strength and appearance.

Crowns are used to support bridges and can also be used to aid the retention of a denture.

Dental crowns may be the ideal choice for you if you’re looking to protect a weak tooth, restore a broken tooth, cover a tooth with a large filling, hold a dental bridge in place, cover a misshapen or discoloured tooth, cover a dental implant or cover a tooth that has been treated with a root canal.

Dentures

Dentures are removable false teeth, usually made of acrylic (plastic), nylon or metal. They fit over the gums to replace missing teeth and eliminate potential problems caused by gaps.

At Bright and White Dental Spa, our dentures are made from modern, comfortable materials and are a long way from the prominent, bulky dentures of the past.

We offer both complete and partial dentures, and are happy to arrange a consultation to discuss the best option for you.

Complete Dentures

Generally, complete dentures are only fitted if all of your upper or lower teeth need to be removed, or you’re having an old complete denture replaced.

The denture will usually be fitted as soon as your teeth are removed and will fit snugly over your gums and jawbone.

Partial Dentures

A partial denture is designed to fill in the gaps left by one or more missing teeth. It usually clips onto some of your natural teeth via metal clasps, which hold it in place in your mouth.

Whether you’ve lost a few teeth or all of them, having a full, glistening smile greatly improves your confidence and overall quality of life. At Bright And White Dental Spa, we use the most advanced techniques to capture accurate data about your mouth shape so your dentures fit and work perfectly.

Restorative dentistry is the perfect solution to restore your teeth to their former glory.
