Porcelain Crowns

Crowns are designed to completely change the way a person’s teeth look. They are an ideal way of covering misshapen, discoloured and heavily restored teeth. Crowns are used to support bridges and can also be used to aid the retention of a denture. They provide splinting for broken teeth allowing pressure to be distributed evenly.

How long do porcelain crowns last?

Porcelain crowns can last between 5 to 15 years, but this is dependent on how well you look after your teeth and what oral hygiene practices you follow. If you follow a very high level of oral hygiene and have a very healthy lifestyle the life span of your porcelain crowns can last 25-30 years.

How do I know if porcelain crowns is the right treatment for me?

Porcelain crowns are a long lasting and practical solution used by many people for:

  • Covering stained teeth
  • Improving the aesthetics of your teeth
  • If you have heavily filled in teeth, to help improve the strength
  • Single tooth restoration – if you are having a dental implant we will need to place a crown over the implant
  • They are placed after root canal treatment when teeth become weak and brittle and require additional protection.

The dentist will discuss all options in full at your appointment and help you decide if this is the right treatment for your particular case.

Do I need to do anything different after I have my crowns?

You can eat and drink normally after porcelain crowns have been fitted, they should function just like a normal tooth. If you’ve been given anaesthetic you’ll need to avoid hot food and drink for at least 2-3 hours. If you are somebody that grinds their teeth at night the dentist will recommend a mouth guard to protect your teeth and prevent damage to porcelain crowns.
